Growing up in Gibsons, BC on the Sunshine Coast just a short ferry ride from Vancouver I never got "used" to spotting marine mammals...either from the beach, ferry or kayak. Often it's orcas or dolphins and once a juvenile grey whale that got caught by the tides in Porpoise Bay for a few days before it could leave again. From my office near the marina I took great joy telling my customer in New York that there was a literally a whale just outside my window...before smart phones it was hard to convince them I was telling the truth.
Writing this blog I realize there are so many sightings that stand out in my mind - now living in Davis Bay it's easy to tell when the whales are going past with all the cars and people clamoring to get to the seawall to watch from the shore. I feel very connected to the coast and support MERS in their work in educating the public and protecting these incredible creatures.
